“Being a Friend”
13 people think this is Nice! There is a boy named Philip, he has a very severe case of autism. He shouts in class, says inappropriate things, but he is one of the smartest kids in our grade. We were in math class and we had to go into partners, I asked Philip to be my partner. You could tell that he was surprised to be asked, because he usually works alone, but he very excitedly said yes. He is an extremely sweet guy when you get to know him. We ended up finishing the activity first. Not only did it make him happy, it made me happy to have helped him out. Philip and I are now friends, and we work together often. The feeling I got from being his partner and making him feel better was so special, it was awesome! :)

What an inspirational story!!! I've shared it with my teenage son. Thank you for the Boom Boom!
From a gal who used to "like" working alone on school projects, you're awesome! Thanks for not being scared off, first of all by his autism, but secondly by his stand offishness. It takes a truly brilliant person to sweep past these obstacles.
What an awsome feeling, in my younger years I always felt the need to make freinds with those kids nobody ever liked or just made fun of. It some how helped me get through the day knowing I made a new friend or just made them smile. I have not had the oppurtunity lately but you never now what tommorow will bring hopefully a new friend.
I love that feeling! I did somthing similar at lunch... I sat with a kid that usually eats alone rather that my normal friends. Just his smile made it worth it!
I work with an autistic kid doing behavioral play therapy. It is so lovely of you to extend yourself to him. Autistics often have a difficult time in social interaction. They crave it but do not always know how to ask for it or how to conduct themselves in a socially "normal" way. Good for you! More people should do that. Autistics are people too, they just have a different way of looking at the world.
BANDGEEK115: I think what you did is also wonderful. Looking back, I remember the kids who ate lunch alone in school and I always hated watching others be mean to them. I wish that I had had the guts to stand up to the bullies for them and to be the person to offer them a friendly smile and chat with them over lunch. To you this may have been a small gesture, but to him, this could have really been a huge thing that will impact the rest of his life.
Both of you: keep doing what you are doing. You are making this world a better place. Thank you!
