Letters Home
Inspired by this card, I've been writing letters to my grandma for about a month. She loves it and promptly replies. I didn't anticipate how uplifting it would feel to both send and receive a letter. The phone is great, but I won't have transcripts of our phones calls to hold on to. The letters will last forever. <3

Good Cents
I bought a Snapple and candy bar for the teenager in line in front of me when their card declined.

Special Delivery!
My niece is going through a tough breakup (ah, young love), so my hubby and I had some flowers delivered to celebrate her half-birthday. They were Halloween themed, which she loved.

Peet to the rescue
On my way into a Peet's coffee shop early yesterday morning, I noticed a woman sitting on the ground who seemed really down in the dumps. Instead of meeting my gaze, she concentrated on the cold ground before her with her hair hanging in her face. I bought her a coffee and bagel. It felt awesome when she took a sip and sighed "that hits the spot". I'm grateful for the experience!

Connection through disaster
I live in California, where the wildfires have been devastating in the last few months. One silver lining is that I've used the opportunity to get in touch with many family and friends who I haven't spoken with in awhile.

Life Stories
My partner's grandmother recently passed away. Although her passing wasn't a complete surprise, it utterly shocked him and his family. Understandably, everyone was devastated. It was hard for me to express my sympathy to them. Every time that I would try, I thought it either sounded like I giving them advice (not what I would want to hear if I were grieving), or inundating them with the same phrases ("I'm so sorry", or worse, "I know how you're feeling"). My heart was in the right place. I just wanted them to know that they were not alone, and that someone cared about their loss. I decided that notes might be a better way to express my condolences. After the funeral, I spent some time in the parking lot distributing notes to each of his aunts, uncles, cousins and his mom under their windshield wipers. Since I am close with his family, and have great memories with them all, the notes contained my favorite moments with each of them. The cool thing was, that I realized that his grandma was in all of the stories in some capacity. I didn't really intend this, but his mom later told me that everyone talked about how it reminded them that stories are how his grandma will live on. Boom Boom!
Summer is just around the corner!

Paying to Park
The other day I was paying for parking in an outside parking garage in downtown Santa Cruz. There were a few people in line ahead of me, so I was waiting to pay and watching people pass on the street.
I noticed a young man, probably around 18 years old, standing off to the side and staring intently at the line of people purchasing parking tickets. He looked slightly disturbed, and I could tell that his staring was making the people in line a little bit nervous.
As the person at the head of the line finished with his transaction and walked away, I saw the youth speak to him as he passed. The man ignored the youth, and kept on walking. As I watched, I saw the youth's composure begin to crumble and tears come to his eyes. He looked so defeated, that I was moved to go over and start a conversation with him. He explained to me that he had 3 minutes to get to a job interview, and that he'd left his wallet at home. He didn't even have the $1.00 to park and he was in a complete panic.
We got back into line, and I paid for his parking for one hour. I can't believe how grateful and happy he was! I didn't have the card to pass to him at the time, but I think that he'll remember this Boom Boom! and pass it on when he sees the opportunity.
